There are several types of gum surgeries that may be performed, depending on the specific needs of the patient.
- Scaling and root planing: This non-surgical procedure involves cleaning the teeth and roots to remove plaque and tartar buildup and smooth out rough spots on the tooth roots.
- Pocket reduction surgery: This procedure is used to treat moderate to advanced cases of periodontal disease, where the gums have pulled away from the teeth, creating pockets that harbor bacteria and cause bone loss. The surgeon will fold back the gum tissue and remove bacteria and damaged tissue, then secure the gums back in place.
3. Gum graft surgery: This procedure is used to treat gum recession, where the gum tissue has pulled away from the teeth, exposing the roots. The surgeon will take tissue from another part of the mouth and graft it onto the affected area to cover the exposed roots.
4. Crown lengthening: This procedure is used to treat a gummy smile, where the gums cover too much of the teeth, making them appear short. The surgeon will remove excess gum tissue and reshape the gums to expose more of the teeth.
Gum surgery can help to improve the health and appearance of the gums, prevent further damage to the teeth and surrounding tissues, and restore proper function to the mouth.
